Nairobi fly dermatitis

Dear Patient

Your symptoms are suggestive of contact dermatitis.

You may have reacted to something that came in close contact with your skin while you were sleeping.

Examples include insects like the one which causes Nairobi Fly Dermatitis. This insect which is found in many parts of the world causes a dermatitis when it is crushed on the skin – this usually happens when one is sleeping.

Contact Dermatitis Treatment

The treatment of contact dermatitis is as follows:

1. Clean the area with tepid water.

2. Apply a mild steroid cream like 1% Hydrocortisone twice a day for around 5 days.

3. Apply an antibacterial cream like Bactroban if you notice any sign of infection like yellow crusting.

4. If the itching persists, consider taking an anthistamine by mouth. Examples include the non-sedating fexofenadine (Allegra) and loratadine (Claritin) as well as the less sedating cetirizine (Zyrtec). The sedating diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and hydroxyzine (Atarax, Vistaril) are also used to reduce the itch if it disturbs sleep.
