Dear Patient
Long Healthy Hair Tips
*Eat complete proteins.
Hair is made of a protein known as keratin and to have long, healthy hair, you need to eat protein and especially complete proteins which contain all the essential amino acids.
Foods with complete proteins include eggs and beef. If you are a vegetarian you can combine some plant-based foods to make complete proteins. For example maize and beans make a complete protein.
*Take biotin
Biotin is a B vitamin which is also known as vitamin H. It is thought to improve the structure of keratin which is found in the skin, hair and nails. Biotin is also thought to help hair density (make the hair thicker) by increasing the size of the hair follicle. Biotin is found in whole wheat bread, eggs, peanuts, bananas, liver, salmon, and chicken. It is also available as a supplement and the suggested dose for biotin is 2.5 mg (2500 micrograms) If you decide to take biotin supplements, consult your doctor before you begin as it can interact with some medications.
*Trim your hair
Get regular hair cuts frequently especially if you have split ends to prevent them extending up the hair shaft and causing more breakages. Getting 1/8” cut of every 3 months is a good estimate for most persons since most hair grows by 1/2” each month.
*Get scalp massages
Give yourself a scalp massage each evening as it boosts the circulation of blood to the hair follicles which can enhance hair growth.
*Avoid heat styling
Avoid using blow dryers, curling irons and other tools that style your hair with heat as they can damage your hair.
*Reduce shampooing
Do not shampoo everyday (thrice a week is enough) since this strips the natural oils from the hair that keep it long and looking healthy.
* Always condition your hair
When you wash your hair, always condition it to replace proteins and lipids (fats) in the hair shaft as well as seal the hair cuticle.
*Pre-poo with coconut oil
Coconut oil has been proven to prevent protein loss when washing the hair. It also fills the hair shaft with fatty acids. Therefore apply some coconut oil to your hair and wear a shower cap for 10 to 15 minutes before you shampoo and condition your hair.
*Always rinse with cold water
After shampooing and conditioning your hair, always ensure that the final rinse is with cold water since this closes the hair cuticle which prevents loss of moisture from the hair and some damage by heat. The result of this simple step is that your hair will grow longer and look healthier.
*Brush your hair gently
Brush your hair gently with a bristle boar brush to distribute the natural oils that are produced by the scalp along the entire hair shaft.
