Dear Patient
When treating dark acne marks which are also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH sunscreen is very important.
It is recommended to use a broad spectrum sunscreen which protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. The sunscreen should also have a SPF (sun protection factor) or atleast 30. In addition, it should also be non-comedogenic (should not clog your skin pores).
It may therefore be a bit difficult to find a combination product which contains a sunscreen with these characteristics and a potent dark mark treatment.
Consequently, I suggest the following treatment for dark acne marks:
Dark Acne Marks Morning Treatment
A simple morning regimen for treating dark acne marks can include using the following products:
Cleanser
Cleanse with a face wash that contains ingredients that treat acne like benzoyl peroxide. For example you can use Clean and Clear Face Wash.
Exfoliating Moisturizer OR Skin Brightener Moisturizer
Moisturize the skin with a moisturizer which contains an exfoliator like salicylic acid. This is a substance that loosens the glue between the dead cells on the surface of the skin and helps them fall off so that the brighter skin below can be revealed. For example, you can use Clean and Clear Oil-Free Moisturizer because it contains salicylic acid.
You can also apply a moisturizer that contains skin brighteners like vitamin C or vitamin B3.
SPF 30 Sunscreen
A sunscreen which has all the factors mentioned above is Elta MD SPF 46 sunscreen.
Dark Acne Marks Night Treatment
After cleansing your skin in the night apply a product contains retinol. For example, you can use Neutrogena dark spot corrector which contains vitamin C and retinol.
Adopt an Acne Free Lifestyle
Adopting an acne free lifestyle is very important because it can prevent the recurrence of pimples and the formation of new acne marks. To do this you can do the following:
*Join a smoking cessation program if you smoke cigarettes
*Eat vitamin A rich foods like dark green leafy vegetables
*Avoid sugary foods like cakes and eat low glycemic index foods like whole grain bread. To learn more read How to Treat Acne at Home.
