Dear Patient

Your symptoms are suggestive of inflammatory acne.

Inflammatory acne is characterized by erythematous papules and nodules (small and large red swellings) as well as pustules and cysts (small and large swellings filled with pus).

Over the Counter Inflammatory Acne Treatment

I recommend the following over the counter treatment for your inflammatory acne:

Benzoyl peroxide cleanser

Benzoyl peroxide reduces inflammation because it has anti-inflammatory properties. By controlling bacteria, it also reduces the inflammation they cause.

You should therefore use products which contain benzoyl peroxide like Clean and Clear Acne Cleanser .

Salicylic acid moisturizer

Salicylic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties. You can use moisturizers with it like Clean and Clear Oil Free Moisturizer.

Night time retinol

Retinol helps clear up acne and reduce the formation of blackheads.  You can use a product like Amara Organics Retinol 2.5% Serum at night.

Prescription Inflammatory Acne Treatment

For the best results,  consult the nearest doctor and to get the following treatment:

Clindamycin for the morning

Get a prescription for the antibiotic Clindamycin to apply to your face in the morning after cleansing. Clindamycin has anti-inflammatory properties and it is also effective against the bacteria P. acnes. These bacteria play an important role in the development of inflammation  in acne lesions.

A retinoid at night

Retinoids are more potent than retinols and get a prescription of a retinoid that can apply to the skin at night after cleansing. Examples include tretinoin (Retin A, Renova), adapalene (Differin, Clear) and tazarotene (Tazorac, Zores).

Adopt an Acne-Free Lifestyle

Adopt an acne-free lifestyle by doing the following:

*Joining a smoking cessation program if you smoke cigarettes

*Cleaning your mobile phone with antiseptic wipes regularly

*Eating low glycemic index foods like whole grain bread, spinach, and tomatoes. To learn more read How to Treat Acne at Home.
