The condition that your wife has developed is known as a hypertropic scar.
A hypertrophic is a scar which enlarges but does not extend beyond the borders of the original wound.
I suggest the following treatment for hypertrophic scars:
Silicone Gel
Apply a Silicone gel like ScarAway to the hypertrophic scar. This gel can be bought over the counter and should be used to gently massage the scar each day.
Sunscreen
Hypertrophic scars tend to darken if exposed to the sun especially in the early stages. It is therefore wise to apply a Broad spectrum sunscreen that offer protection from UVA and UVB rays and that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 every day.
Steroid Tape
If you do not see much improvement after massaging the scar with a silicone gel for atleast a month, consult your nearest doctor and ask them about using tapes which contain corticosteroid medications like the Cordran tape.
