mole removal

Dear Patient

Congenital nevi treatment or mole removal is done by:

1. Surgical excision

In this procedure the doctor numbs the area with local anesthesia, cuts out the entire mole and a narrow margin of normal skin and closes the wound with sutures. The removed mole is sent to the lab to be examined if it has cancer cells.

Other adjunctive therapies used to treat giant congenital nevi include:

2. Chemical peels

3. Dermabrasion

4. Laser ablation

You do not specify your country but in most places the patient is first seen by a family physician/general practitioner who then refers them to a dermatologist.

The length of treatment depends on the size of the nevi. Small congenital nevi can be removed in one session but giant ones need several sessions.
